Michael Eiser is a Professor of English Literature at Edinburgh University. He is described by one student as 'an old fascist', and his theory of reading 'a piece of right wing propaganda'. He has written a book called Reading Exercises and Directed Exegetic Responses, about word-play in literature such as Nabokov and Burgess. In the course of writing the book he noticed in a newspaper a pattern in the initials of the victims of the Edinburgh Strangler - that they spelt out the name of his last victim, Samantha. He phoned the investigation department at Waverly and informed John Rebus of his find. After the kidnapping of Samantha Rebus, he was taken in for questioning by the police.
