Detective Sergeant Jack Morton is an officer in the Lothian and Borders Police. Born in 1953, he joined the force at the age of 15, slogging his way up to his position through hard work. It was in the force that he met John Rebus, and the two went on a fishing trip to Berwick and exchanged life stories. Since then they became friends, and in 1988 worked the Edinburgh Strangler case together.

He later was transferred to Falkirk CID, then loaned to Glasgow for a while.
